Dream Quest App Reviews

6 Plus (iOS 8.3)

I agonized for days before pulling the trigger on this one. Check out the review over at Pocket Tactics and game forum at Touch Arcade if youre on the fence. The developer has been very gracious and accommodating toward both existing and prospective customers. Thats what finally compelled me to go ahead with the purchase, and Im glad I did. This title is laden with depth and substance. The art is...well...it is what it is. Dont make the mistake of letting that deter you, though. Per the forums, there will be many updates in the coming months, one of which may deal with that particular issue. The one-man development team, a graduate student on a very tight budget, has openly acknowledged the obvious visual shortcomings. However, buyers may rest assured that its a title of many virtues and few faults. And...no more HEARTHSTONE since grabbing this title! It did move me in the direction of Ascension, an iOS titan that employs the deck building mechanic.

Fantastic update

This has been my go to game for months. The recent update is great. The new class is a fun twist to add to the game and the clarifications on the cards are very good. But, the best part of the update is the update to the Professor. This makes the Professor into a completely ridiculous class which is the most fun to min/max for someone like me. Blue Mage as it should be done.

One of the best games on App Store

Combination rogue-like, deck builder, and RPG. A whole ton of different classes that play very differently from one another. I have been playing tho game for months and I am still finding new strategies to win and unlocking content. There are few games on the App Store that have held my attention as Dream Quest has. This indie designer did such a good job on this game that Blizzard recruited him apparently.

I love the graphics!

This is an amazing game. Its quite difficult and you die often. BUT you gain achievements, special cards, special abilities, new characters and points towards more achievements every time you play. Im new to this style game and not very good at it yet, but I am obsessed!! Please everyone stop going on about the artwork. I really like the straightforward simple graphics! It works well with this game. It makes it seem approachable! The game is not simple- its very complex as you continue to play. The graphics are perfect, they dont scare you away! Im so over the grandly designed games with insane and intense mega graphics that dont add to the game, and take up so much space and battery! I love everything about this game, except its slightly annoying to die when youve built a great deck... (Dont waste your points on continuing a game! I promise you need those points to buy difficult achievements!) So Ive only made it to level 3 2x so far... Thats pathetic, I know. But Im still learning!!! Get this game, forget about the graphics. Youll come to love it as it is!!!

Addictive.

Sure, Star Realms and Ascension and other games have better graphics but this is good. Crazy good. The best part for me is that you can play and leave the game with no worries, so you can get a good, quick session for a few minutes while you are on the run or waiting somewhere. The numerous unlocks and randomly generated boards mean you will be playing this jewel for a long time to come trying different combinations of classes and cards to get that ideal mix. The difficulty is also high, something of a rarity. The records and statistics keeping is a great feature to remind you of those “epic quests.” This is a great example of how minimalism in graphics can be overcome with super compelling gameplay and a laser focus on mechanics.

Best iOS game

Its been weeks now, and I cannot stop playing this game. The graphics are hilarious, the gameplay is incredibly deep and merciless, but there are so many achievements to unlock and each one improves the game experience just a little bit more. If you love a well-crafted game, have a sense of humor, and can handle the occasional crushing defeat, this is absolutely the game of the decade.

This game is at least 100 hours long.

I am serious. Hear me out. This is the only game I DEMAND that people with iPhones play. If you have played ANY card game from poker to Yugioh, you HAVE TO GET THIS! The graphics are so minimal that you end up LOVING THEM! Please do yourself a favor and play this right now, then play it again and again and again! I bet I sound like an ad but seriously, I would put my life on the line for the quality of this game. Play it, and be happy!

Great surprise

I rarely write reviews but after playing Dream Quest I felt compelled to do so. Ive been looking for a great rogue-like game for so long and couldnt be happier. Im the type of person who doesnt care for games where you die time and time again. I bought Bloodborne for the PS4 and sold it in days. With that being said, you will die a lot in this game but with each play through you are rewarded which makes subsequent attempts a little easier. There are so many unlocks my head is spinning. Ive only reached level 3 one time out of my first 10-15 games but have loved every second of it. I love the progression and the general play through is so much fun with random enemies, bosses, and maps. Quite honestly, my only regret with this game is that I didnt get it sooner.

Amazing, addictive game.

The graphics are not flattering, but it keeps the game snappy and void of any fillers. Ive been playing this for weeks now and just cant get enough.

Brilliant game.

Screenshots cannot convey how brilliant his game is. Goes to show how vastly more important good game design is over good visuals. Extremely addicting and one of the best rogue-likes on the App Store.

Best Rogue-like AND CCG

This is my new favorite game, I dont know why on earth I have waited so long to enjoy it. Im having a major where have you been all my life moment. If you like rogue-like dungeon crawlers thats what this is, with collectable card combat. Its pure genius. I find the graphics simplicity quite charming myself and Ill tell you I would rather play this then other f2p garbage with $ grubbing IAP and the best graphics ever. I have played them all, and this is the best.

Almost too hard

Not to sound like a whiner but this game is borderline too hard. I love a challenge but 30 runs through the dungeon barely ever getting to the 3rd and final level is mindlessly frustrating. I found myself playing with the melee character at first which is much easier than the other ones. The abilities of the enemy are ridiculous like the hag that literally turns 3 of your cards into completely useless "curse" cards. I just faced a monster that had like 80 life and by the 4th turn its "ability" made me unable to draw a card at all, no choice but to die. Not to mention I havent even played it on the hardest difficulty yet. I have a feeling itll be impossible. With that being said it has uniquely satisfying quick paced card combat, and the artwork in no way impacts the enjoyment of this game.

My favorite single-player game on any platform

If the idea of a deckbuilding roguelike appeals to you at all, immediately purchase Dream Quest. It is a game of extraordinary cleverness and fascination; as of this writing, Ive played 440 times, and I wouldnt be surprised if I kept doing so until I die. As an example of its power over me, I first beat* it on my honeymoon in Iceland. My wife wasnt as happy as I was. *well, maybe someday Ill be a Master Thief, but not yet.

Great game despite graphics

Wow. What a treat. The mechanics of this game are awesome. Perfect execution. Love the achievements - always feel like I am working for something. If the cards in this game had better graphics this game would be even more incredible. The mechanics are so good, however, that after a while, you dont even notice the graphics. Definitely give it a try. You get a whole lot of game for your $.

Excellent game. Needs balancing/difficulty work

See title.

Best game ever

This is a really good, fun, and challenging game. It is soooo addicting!!!!!

excellent

great game! Easily my most played, never leaving my device.

Terrific game

Dont let the graphics fool you, this is one of the most entertaining games for iOS. Infinite replayability. Highly recommended.

Best Rougelike Deck-Building game on iOS

The graphics are charming after looking at them for so long. This game is pretty deep with strategy taking precedence over flair. There are a wide variety of characters (each with their own special abilities) and gameplay revolves around adding or deleting cards as you fight your way through 3 floors of monsters with a boss for each floor. Your character maxes out at level 10. Each monster has a deck and a strategy, and they will sometimes drop a chest, card, loot. The challenge comes in the form of deciding which strategy or cards to pick to optimize your chances of victory in future battles. The game takes place in various locations: forest, in the sky, a crypt, volcanic area, under the sea, a dungeon. On each floor there are also little houses to buy items with in game loot (cards, mana, health, experience, or equipment, etc.) There are also special events and places to go: a spring to fully heal you, a monastery to delete unwanted cards, an anvil used to upgrade cards and altars to pray to for added buffs and some negative consequences. Completing a floor gives you the option to do a variety of extra effects from adding an equipment slot, increasing health, mana, etc. With each play through, youre trying to work your way through a couple of pages of achievements that range from beating the game with specific characters or bosses, etc. You can also use points earned from game runs to purchase achievements, perfect if you want early access to character classes that may be a little hard to achieve normally. The game is highly recommend. The developer is so good, he got invited to work for Hearth Stone. Im still hoping Peter Whalen, games creator, releases his game Hoshiken( I cant find the page of what he was actually going to call it, started with an H). Overall, do play this game.

Gameplay as deep as the graphics are ugly

This game just ate my weekend. I think the graphics were literally made in MS Paint, but the design beneath the blocky images and goofy writing is absolutely brilliant. It’s similar to Ascension on iOS, and the classic Shandalar on PC. Roguelike, build a deck, die horribly, throw your phone across the room, compulsively start new game. Tons of variety; each of the character classes has its own flavor and plays differently from the others. I can’t recommend this game highly enough, even if it frequently manages to make me really, really angry.
